Scoping review of yoga in schools Hart, Fawkner, Niven and Booth, Children, 2022. The most recent of the three. Fifty-nine studies. It says plainly where the evidence is strong, where it is moderate, and where it is thin. Free to read in full. https://www.mdpi.com/2227-9067/9/6/849

What sleep, food, and movement do for a child's ability to learn Jirout and colleagues, Nutrients, 2019. A review of how what a child eats, how much they move, and how well they sleep shape attention, working memory, and the ability to learn — and how tangled the three are with each other. Honest that the research is thinner than it should be. Free to read in full. https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/11/8/1953

The research behind this work

None of these studied my program. They studied yoga and breath practice with school-aged children, which is what I teach and where I teach it. Read them yourself.

How self-regulation works: brain, breath, and body Gard, Noggle, Park, Vago and Wilson, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2014. How postures, breath, and attention train the brain's control networks and the nervous system at the same time, and why the skill carries off the mat and into daily life. A proposed model rather than a study, and it says so. Free to read in full. https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/human-neuroscience/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2014.00770/full

Are there benefits from teaching yoga at schools? Ferreira-Vorkapic and colleagues, Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2015. A slow-breathing curriculum for high school students Bentley and colleagues, Frontiers in Rehabilitation Sciences, 2022. Five minutes of slow breathing, three times a week, taught to twelfth graders.
